Lewisham Council announce changes to LTN measures

 But is it enough? Why is it all in Hither Green?

Lewisham Council announce changes to LTN plan – on November 9

 After weeks of chaos and carnage on Loampit Vale, Lee High Rd and Thurston Road, changes are coming to Lewisham. The new traffic black hole of south London. It comes into effect in over two weeks time. In the meantime, the traffic can carry on backing up the hill.On one wet evening last week, the jam went all the way to the Old Kent Road.  What confuses me about these changes is they are nowhere near the main point of trouble; the junction in the middle of Lewisham. You know the one; where buses, lorries and all other vehicles try to cross each other to go down Lee High Road or Lewisham Road, having come from Loampit Vale (from New Cross) or Molesworth St (from Catford). The changes outlined below are all in the Hither Green area, way south of where the traffic grinds to a halt. Its not enough, and I cannot see how it will change things much.

The changes will be;

  • In Manor Lane, the existing camera will be adjusted to allow vehicles to pass through in both directions, except heavy goods vehicles
  • In Manor Park, the existing camera will be adjusted to allow vehicles to travel northbound (towards Lee High Road). The camera will continue to enforce vehicles who try to travel southbound
  • The existing cameras in Ennersdale Road and Dermody Road will be adjusted to allow vehicles to travel one-way west to east (from Hither Green towards Lee Green). The camera will continue to enforce vehicles who try to travel east to west (from Lee Green towards Hither Green)
  • In Leahurst Road, a physical barrier will be moved to allow vehicles to travel west to east (from Hither Green towards Lee Green). A new camera will enforce this. A physical barrier will remain in place that will prevent vehicles travelling east to west (from Lee Green towards Hither Green).

Tremendous it is not. It’s a start I suppose. The people who are responsible for these measures should be held to account, preferably on a Friday night. Stand outside the police station and tell the passers by how its good for the air pollution and cyclists. Lets have a calm debate. Well, its worth a try.
